Harold "Jack" George

Harold “Jack” George, age 100, of Pierce City, MO. passed away on Monday, August 16 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon, MO. Jack was born on July 8, 1921, to Harold Holden and Ruth Faye Wright George in Ames, Iowa. He married Joanne Moore on December 28, 1947, at the First Congregational Church in Pierce City, MO. Joanne preceded him in death on December 13, 2011. Jack is survived by his four children: Janene Kipers and husband Gary, Jim George and wife Betty, Julie Garner and husband Bryce, all of Pierce City, John George and wife Ramona of Rogersville; four grandchildren: Jeremy George and wife Brenna of Monett, Jason George and wife Erin of Clinton, Iowa, Kris Stoker and wife Sabrina of Kansas City, Annie George of Pierce City; eight great-grandchildren: Cooper, Adyson, Ruby, and Rowan George, Lilly and Benjamin Stoker, Ellery and Jack George; and a special cousin: Bill Roberts of Lincoln, CA. Besides his wife Joanne, Jack was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Jenny Garner. Jack’s family spent his early years in Pierce City, California, and Texas until he was in fourth grade. The family then moved back to Pierce City, and he lived there until he graduated from Pierce City High School. He attended one year at Monett Junior College. Jack was a proud Veteran of the United States Army. Jack joined the Pierce City National Guard in 1938 at the age of 16. He was called to WW II active duty in September of 1940, where he went to Camp Hulen, which was near Palacios, TX. He was a Private First Class at this time but was promoted to Corporal while there. After spending 15 months in Texas and after Pearl Harbor, he was sent to Los Angeles, CA. until June of 1942. He then attended anti-artillery Officer Candidate School at Camp Davis, NC and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. After graduation, he spent a short time in California and was sent to Schofield Barracks on Oahu, Hawaii for nine months. In August of 1943, he was sent to the South Pacific and spent time in Samoa, the New Hebrides, and the Solomon Islands in a searchlight unit protecting airfields and remained there until he returned to the states. He was sent to Fort Bliss, TX. to instruct at the Air Defense Artillery School for the rest of the war. He was sent home on leave in 1945. After WW II, Jack was in the Active Reserve, Inactive Reserve, and the Retired Reserve. Jack was in the service for about 45 years, and he reached the rank of Captain. After discharge, Jack attended school at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Joanne (a family friend) was attending school at Christian College there and asked Jack to a dance at the all-girls school she was attending. The rest is history! They fell in love, got married at the First Congregational Church in Pierce City in 1947 while still attending school, and lived in Columbia until they decided to move back to Pierce City and take over the family business due to Jack’s father’s failing health. They were happily married for almost 64 years. Jack owned and operated George Produce/Purina Chows, raised turkeys, and built and operated Ag Service Center feed and fertilizer business for many years. He was a fine and well-respected businessman and has given a lot to his community. He was always involved in many organizations including Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, and the American Legion, to name a few. He served time on the school board, library board, museum board, cemetery board, and he loved being a member of the First Congregational Church in Pierce City, where he proudly sang in the choir since his youth. Jack loved to fish and hunt, especially fish. He loved fishing trips with his boys, grandsons, and many close fishing buddies, and those to Canada and one to Alaska were definitely highlights. He enjoyed spending time at the lake and the beach with his family and close friends, and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time at his family pool. He took great care of himself over the years, which probably contributed to him reaching the ripe old age of 100. He was witty and a lot of fun. He truly enjoyed life. Jack was a true family man that adored his wife and children, and they adored him. He was an excellent provider and role model, and he was respected by so very many. Jack George, an Officer, and a Gentleman. He will be greatly missed. Friends may pay their respects from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. on Friday, August 27, 2021, at Lakin Funeral Home, Pierce City, MO. Military graveside service at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Pierce City Cemetery in Pierce City, MO with Dr. James Adams and Jack Goodman officiating. Memorials can be made to the First Congregational Church in Pierce City in care of the funeral home. The family requests everyone observe all Covid precautions, including masks and social distancing, to keep everyone safe. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City, MO.
